Providing Health Insurance Can Reduce Your Child Support

A court calculates the amount of child support to be paid based on guidelines that the Ohio Supreme Court has created. These guidelines are based on both parents’ gross incomes. Gross income means the total of all earned and unearned income from all sources during a year.

So, how does paying health insurance premiums affect the child and the overall child support amount, for the person paying?

First, it’s important to note that the child or children will receive adequate healthcare coverage with private insurance. That is very good for the child/children. And, health insurance premiums that you pay for your child are treated as a deduction to the obligor (the person paying) in a child support calculation. This deduction can lower the monthly amount of support you pay. Everyone’s child support calculation is different, depending on various factors.
